Tyra Banks uses her show as a platform to talk about race. I have posted a few videos that have inspired me.
Deana Lawson is an African American photographer who explores the identities, relationships, political views with in the black community. I found her to be encouraging and would like to further look into her work.

“Guess the Race”
This is a great modern dialogue… yes, I get that a talk-show can get kitschy, but this is a great episode. The candor of the guests is amazing… There’s a reason it isn’t a state flag anymore.
Do you have the “Bleaching” episode?
Love the experiment with the “guess the person without seeing them.”
The hair dialogue was fascinating… I searched the end-result (part 5).
So you have an interesting debacle: the reality is that while the visual arts is a good launching pad for dialogue, it is the dialogue that begins to make a difference. Your next step is making your decision about whether you are going to make a passive statement (art is something people can walk away from–they choose to interact or not to interact) or an active statement (using the art to start the dialogue). Or, you can start a dialogue… and document it.
I want your work to live beyond the portfolio… search locally and nationally (and internationally) to see how you can activate your piece(s) / show / movie/ etc.. Start at OSU: Kirwan Institute
If you can, consider attending: http://transforming-race.org/index.html
I would be happy to talk wit your other teachers about excusing you from Thursday and Friday classes in order for you to attend.
